This Time Last Year or An Appreciation of Progress

I just got back from my second barre class.

You’re supposed to feel like this:

beautiful body

But I feel like this:

sloth climbing tree

Yes, that is a sloth climbing a tree.

Seriously guys, within 5 minutes I am dripping sweat and within 20 I am nauseous and looking at the clock to see how much longer I have until the class is over. 30 minutes in and I feel like every major muscle group and most minor ones are on the verge of cramping.

It is one of the most humiliating and depressing experiences I put myself through these days.

Kind of like when I look at other peoples blogs and websites.

You know when you read a great article and so you check out the author’s page and then click to their website and then you go down that rabbit-hole of comparison? And you start looking at more and more websites and blogs and comparing yourself to those people, even if they are crazy-sucessful and your idols, like say, Liz Gilbert?

Yeah, me neither.

I never do that. But I have heard that some people do. #nonotmenever

Which brings me to the point of this blog post #gettoitalready, right?

I left my full-time job a year ago.

It was shortly after our family returned from our trip to London and Paris. I was back at work and writing and dreaming about all things French – which turned into my blog, Dreams in French.

I was still working on my second book, The Crime of Deception. [Full disclosure: I still am! If you want to help me my reading my XXX NSFW first draft, drop me a line. I need feedback as I am stalled. #havebeenfor2yearsnow]

One afternoon, I didn’t want to go back to my desk, I just wanted to sit and write all day, and I asked myself How can I find more time to write?

So I began to look for a part-time job and lo and behold! one appeared. I took a part-time job teaching and with Mondays off and shorter hours (even factoring in my long commute) I had more time to do what I wanted to do most: write.

Now that the new school year is on the cusp of beginning (my old district started classes yesterday and my kids start tomorrow) it has hit me that I have been on this dedicated path for a year now.

Let’s take a look at what I have done in that time:

  • pitched an idea for a monthly column to the local newspaper. My first column of The Creative Life appeared in the January issue of the Aptos Times
  • started picking up news assignments like this one from the newspaper
  • updated my LinkedIn profile to better reflect my writing experience and skills

and,  just yesterday, I launched my  writer website

I’d say that’s quite a bit, and I’m sure I missed a couple of things here and there too. I didn’t list the poetry or articles submissions I’ve done (that have come back rejections #insertsadface) or the online courses and trainings I have taken or the Facebook groups I belong to that help me connect with other writers and entrepreneurs, though those have been valuable. [Note to self: *ALERT* Blog Idea!]

I think it is good to take the time to list what I have done in the past year, while being an active, involved mom to two; a loving and (mostly) present partner; a sister; a friend; a chauffeur; a cheerleader; and oh yeah, I was a teacher then too!

Sometimes it feels like I take one step forward and three steps back…

…but I intend to keep on keepin’ on.

I hope you will join me!

With Appreciation,
