Fearless Writing Challenge: Day 75 – The Hottest Night I Ever Had

The hottest night I ever had in my life was in Rome. It was a long, sweaty night and by the time day broke we were exhausted.

But it’s not what you think.

I don’t know what the temperature was, but it felt like Hell. There was no breeze because our small, hot room was on a narrow road not wide enough for cars – which meant it was the perfect size for Vespas.

Lots of them.

All. Night. Long.

Apparently, midnight moped riders on the hottest night in June in Rome like to yell about how freakin’ hot it is.

But it’s not like they woke us up because we couldn’t sleep, so there was that molten hot silver lining.

The best thing we could come up with was to soak our towels and washcloths with cold water in the tiny in-room sink. Then we would wring them out and place them on our naked bodies as we lay on the coverless bed.

This would let us cool off enough to drift off for a few moments until the next group of rowdy Romans roared by on their scooters.

It was a long, hot, tiring night, which made our next stop in Cinque Terre on the Italian coast all that more refreshing!

Buona Notte,
