Daily Blog Challenge Day 7 – What has been your greatest success in life so far?

I’m sure it says something about my make up that this is a difficult question for me to answer. I had to sit and think about it for a while…of course, the first thing that comes to mind is surviving the embarrassing moment I shared with you yesterday.

Sometimes, there are many little successes in each day. When I was in my horrible marriage with two small children I got up and started fresh again each day. That was a success, of sorts.

I left. That was a success of sorts.

I mean, I guess we would really need to start with a definition of success. #overthinking

Rather than go down that rabbit hole, and in the name of keeping this post relatively brief, here is a list of 5 Successes I Have Had Both Big and Small:

  1. My children. Any parent knows that is enough explanation right there. My hearts, my souls, my wondering, wandering joys and founts of constant amazement.

2. Along the life-giving lines…giving a kidney to my sister was a success. When she went into the hospital for the transplant her kidney function was at less than 5% and when she left a few days later it was upwards of 97%. To this day, nearly five years later, it is going strong. #livingdonorsrock

3. I had a successful track career which molded me as a human being – I am a competitor, I fall and get back up, I am coachable, I understand hard-work, team-work, and am goal-oriented. I was a three-time All-American, runner-up (#punny) in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division II National Championships, hold (very old) school records at my high school and at San Francisco State University, and am in both of their Athletic Halls of Fame. #Gators #Mariners

I got second, but I ran my personal best time.

4. I wrote a book in 6 weeks and self-published it. It’s true! I wrote a very dirty sexy book on my lunch breaks and after work and then published it. There were hard copies! I sold some! My friends liked it!

5. I think perhaps my greatest success so far is learning how to be present and grateful. It’s an on-going quest, to be sure, but I feel I have made a lot of progress over the years, and perhaps particularly in the last year or so. I have a lot of moments where I feel content with who I am and what I have. And I notice them. And enjoy them while they last because I know nothing is permanent.

Enjoying the moment in Big Sur.

That feels like success.

What about you? What is your greatest success? I’d love to hear about it. Please, leave a comment and share…
